Connoisseur launches the new 102.9 The Whale — Bringing classic rock back to Hartford

HARTFORD, CT – January 20th, 2015 – Connoisseur Media Connecticut today has proudly launched the new 102.9 The Whale, Hartford’s only Classic Rock station, featuring artists such as Led Zeppelin,
Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, The Who and many more.

Connoisseur made the decision to transform the music on 102.9 to fulfill the wishes of the Hartford audience; the new 102.9 The Whale will give listeners exactly what they want — more Classic Rock.  The station’s new slogan says it all:  102.9 The Whale, Classic Rock Is Back.

102.9 The Whale kicked off this morning by playing the Hartford Whalers’ “Brass Bonanza” into “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)” by AC/DC at 10:29am.

Connecticut has a long affinity with whales; from the beloved long-lost hockey team to the state mammal, the sperm whale.  Now 102.9 The Whale means a whale of Classic Rock for Hartford!

The new exciting lineup of 102.9 The Whale includes Chaz & AJ in mornings, Allan Lamberti in middays, Michael “Picozzi” in afternoons, and Suzi “Klonk” at night.

Michael Picozzi is a legendary Hartford personality who gained fame for his morning work as part of “Picozzi and the Horn” as well as 14 years at WCCC both on the air and in programming.

Suzi Klonk, also a long-time veteran of WCCC, has been working at 102.9 The Whale as
the Promotions Director and weekend air talent.  Klonk smoothly segues into the night jock position while retaining her role as Promotions Director.

“Our team has created an awesome sounding station that our research, listeners and advertisers have been telling us was missing from the Hartford dial since WCCC-FM dropped rock,” said General Manager Kristin Okesson.  She added, “102.9 The Whale integrates well into our content and sales strategy in Connecticut while giving Hartford listeners what they want — more and better Classic Rock.”

Regional Operations Manager Keith Dakin explained, “The Hartford market was lacking a rock station that listeners can have a fun relationship with.  The new 102.9 The Whale will connect with listeners and fill this void.”  He went on, “No radio station in Hartford has offered listeners the Classic Rock they really want, so we are excited to introduce the new 102.9 The Whale with some of Hartford’s most well-known rock personalities.”

“We’re thrilled our Connecticut Radio team has launched another great station to add to our top-shelf portfolio,” said Jeff Warshaw, Connoisseur Media Chief Executive Officer.  He added, “Although our station played some Classic Rock, our research overwhelmingly showed that the people of Hartford wanted a local radio station that was focused on playing only the best Classic Rock on the planet.”
